Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery or Bariatric Surgery is performed on people who are suffering from obesity. It includes a variety of procedures performed on people who suffer from obesity. There are different reasons for increase in weight. It may be due to unhealthy eating habits or because of some health conditions. In any case, Bariatric Surgery will help. A surgery is generally suggested when other forms such as medication and therapy has failed.
Some of the surgeries that are imparted are explained below –
1. Gastric bypass surgery –
This surgery is done to help you get rid of conditions such as gastroesophaegal disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, type 2 diabates, stroke etc. You will have an extensive screening process to check if you are a suitable candidate or not. Generally, you should have body mass index of over 35 to be a candidate. This surgery helps in weight loss by changing the way how the stomach and small intestine handles the food that we eat.
This surgery starts by providing general anesthesia which will make this procedure pain free. In the first step, our stomach will be divided into two sections. First one is upper section and the second one is lower section which is larger in size. When the food is consumed, it will only go to the upper section. Because of this reason, lesser food will be consumed and there will be weight loss. In the second step, tiny part of the small intestine will be connected with your upper section and the consumed food will travel down to the small intestine. Lesser calories will be absorbed in this process.
2. Sleeve gastrectomy -
Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed from the body. Our stomach is reduced to around 15 percent of the original size. The new stomach is the size of a banana. Even if you have consumed small amount of food, you will feel full.
In this procedure, longitudinal resection of the stomach is done. It starts from the antrum at the point 5 – 6 cm from the pylorus and finishing at the fundus close to the cardia. The gastric sleeve that is remaining is calibrated with a bougie.
3. Laparoscopic surgery -
It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which helps in losing weight. Small incisions are made as compared to other surgeries which are complex in nature. This surgery is getting very famous these days as it has lesser scars. The healing in this procedure is quicker and the recovery time is also less. Hospital stay is also of lesser duration.
This process takes its name from laparoscope. It is a slender instrument and has a tiny video camera. Before the start of this procedure, anesthesia is given to the patient. Then, incisions are made below the belly button where a small tube known as cannula is inserted. The cannula inflates our abdomen with carbon dioxide gas.
There are several benefits related to weight loss surgery –
1. Massive loss of weight will also help us in doing more daily activities which were not possible due to weight.
